How the picker chooses
Every practice comes from our guide to grounding exercises, plus the body scan and bedtime sequence from our mindfulness techniques for rest and the sit spot from eco spirituality. The choice follows a simple map:
- A busy mind: senses and breath, such as the 5-4-3-2-1 senses scan or three slow sighs.
- Coming back to your body: touch, temperature and movement, such as feet on the floor, cool water on your hands or a short muscle relaxation.
- Winding down for sleep: a longer out-breath, a body scan, or closing the day with a worry list and the screens out of reach.
- Where you are: at a desk you get something discreet; outdoors, something that uses the space around you; in bed, something you can do lying down.
Each result also suggests a back-up, because what helps on a crowded train is not always what helps at night.
Make it a habit, not only a rescue
Grounding works best as a skill you keep warm. Try your practice once on a calm day, and it will be much easier to reach when you need it. A light rhythm: a minute in the morning, a minute before the afternoon, and a few slow minutes in the evening. For breathing practices, our breathing pacer keeps the 4 in, 6 out rhythm for you.
Some people enjoy pairing grounding with gentle spiritual practices. These can sit alongside care, never instead of it.
Put together by Elisabeth from the practices in our guides.

Frequently asked questions
What is a grounding exercise?
A grounding exercise is a short practice that brings your attention back to the present moment through your senses, your breath or your body: naming what you can see, breathing out slowly, or feeling your feet on the floor. It is a self-care skill, and it does not replace treatment.
Which grounding exercise is best for a busy mind?
The 5-4-3-2-1 senses scan is a good first choice, because describing real things in detail gives your attention a job. With only a minute, three slow sighs or feet on the floor are quicker. Long exhale breathing, 4 in and 6 out, works almost anywhere.
Can I do grounding in bed before sleep?
Yes. Long exhale breathing, a short body scan and kind words to yourself all work lying down. With ten minutes, a simple bedtime sequence moves from breathing to a body scan to simply letting go.
Is grounding the same as earthing?
No. Grounding here means attention practices. Earthing is the idea that touching the earth changes the body through electrical contact, and the research on that is small and early. Standing barefoot on grass is still a lovely sensory exercise in its own right.
How often should I practise grounding?
A minute or two most days is plenty. Practising on calm days makes a technique much easier to reach on harder ones, and over a few weeks you will notice which one you reach for without thinking.
